How do we improve motorcycle safety in Florida?

Motorcycles are part of the culture in Florida, where the good weather and scenic roads draw locals and visitors alike to an adventure on two wheels. This makes motorcycle safety vital to public safety on the roads of the Sunshine State.

The Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for defining and enforcing safe procedures for motorcyclists and other motorists near them. Their research and new initiatives address the largest challenges to an environment free of injury to bikers.

What are the major factors in motorcycle accidents?

Bikers are a diverse population and their difficulties are just as diverse. The two factors that most often show up in a motorcycle crash investigation with injury or death are riders under the influence of drugs or alcohol and failure to wear a helmet.

What can bikers do to avoid factors involving other drivers?

In most motor vehicle accidents involving motorcycles, most drivers of cars and trucks report never seeing the bike and biker until it was too late. It is always best to ride as if no one else can see you. In the case of a damaging or injurious collision with a car, motorcyclists may consider consulting an attorney about showing responsibility in court or settlement.

How can bikers avoid factors involving their own abilities and equipment?

Smart bikers know what they can handle, including speed, maneuverability and range of their mount. The Florida DOT advises people to "ride in control," which means knowing one's limits and obeying all traffic laws. Motorcyclists should also ensure their driver's licenses are properly endorsed after effective training with an experienced biker.
