Semi collides with school bus in Alachua County

Floridians have to share the road with each other to keep the people of the state moving. Although walking and driving is generally safe, there are risks to drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike. Clear attention must be paid to the road and vehicles' surroundings at all times.

A recent study shows that motorists in the Sunshine State are the second-most distracted drivers. Although Floridians rank 39th out of all 50 states in general road safety, they are second only to Louisiana for driving without proper attention to the road.

This indicates that use of cellphones while driving, which is not a primary criminal offense in Florida, is high in the state among all types of drivers. Distracted driving with cellphones has only been a secondary offense, punishable when a driver is being cited for another offense, for the last five years.

An accident is currently under investigation in Alachua County, where a semitruck collided with a school bus in Newbury. The bus was heading west on a divided highway when the truck approached a stop sign at an four-way intersection from the north. Florida state troopers say the driver of the truck did not stop and struck the bus as it passed the intersection.

Fortunately, no children were on the school bus and the driver of the bus survived with minor injuries. Tractor-trailer collisions often cause severe damage to vehicles and serious injury or even death to other motorists.

The victims of truck accidents have the right to seek financial damages to help reimburse them for medical expenses and compensate them for pain and suffering, among other damages. An attorney can help assemble the case for damages against drivers and employers at fault.
