Pit bull injures Florida man while attacking other dog

Dogs are part of our lives and homes to bring us happiness and companionship. Canine friends are usually sociable and normal fixtures of peaceful Florida neighborhoods, but aggressive or unrestrained dogs can cause problems.

Injuries due to domestic animal attacks are rare in the Sunshine State but they can happen. Some breeds, especially when they are not properly trained, are more likely to attack and cause serious harm around humans if they feel threatened.

A pit bull terrier injured a man in a Palm Beach County park after fatally attacking a smaller dog on a recent afternoon. The large dog was running loose when it went after a dog being walked by its owner, according to witnesses.

The human victim suffered a puncture wound while attempting to control the pit bull during the attack, according to local animal care and control officers. The officers managed to restrain the animal despite high aggression and remove it from the park.

Animal care and control cited the dog's caretaker with failure to properly confine the animal, as well as failure to vaccinate and register the dog under Florida and county law. The people who take responsibility for dogs may be legally culpable for any damage or injury that the dog may cause, especially when they violate local laws during care.

The victims of animal attacks when the owner or caretaker is at fault may sue for damages, including present and future medical expenses as well as compensation for pain and suffering. A lawyer may be an ally in the process of dealing with owners and animal enforcement officers during legal proceedings.
