Florida sheriff's deputy killed in semi accident

Trucks keep Florida's economy together. From the Port of Miami to the land of the Panhandle, semis and other heavy vehicles bring in food, clothing, construction materials and more to a majority of people and businesses in the Sunshine State.

Trucks can bring danger to the roads if the drivers are distracted, sleepy or operating rigs without proper maintenance. As a result, the state imposes punishment on people who text while driving or truckers who cause hazards on the road.

A sheriff's deputy was tragically killed in his patrol car when a tractor-trailer struck him on a recent early morning on Interstate 95. Florida Highway Patrol officers said that the truck was in the lane adjacent to the deputy's cruiser when a tire blew out and wrapped around the axle, making the driver lose control of the rig.

The collision closed the highway for hours and sent two other people to the hospital with minor injuries. Family members and the local community joined together after the death to remember the deputy as a helpful, positive person who was passionate about law enforcement.

"We're left here trying to put the pieces together, and trying to remember what I believe was one of [our] heroes," said the sheriff in charge of the deputy.

Victims of truck accidents and the survivors of truck accident fatalities have the right to seek financial restitution from the parties at fault. This may include expenses, costs and compensation for pain and emotional damage. A lawyer may be helpful for victims and their families to explore legal options.
