2 women killed in Ocala hit-and-run accident

Accidents can happen all the time and for any reason. Anyone who has spend time on the streets of Miami or the express lanes of Florida's Turnpike has probably seen some close calls or maybe some collisions that have had disastrous consequences.

Some situations can make accidents more likely to happen, and to be damaging or deadly. Slippery roads due to rain or flooding demand slower speeds and more attention to the road. Drivers looking at their cellphones or other electronics can pull vital attention from other cars long enough to cause an accident.

If a collision occurs with another car or a pedestrian, it is extremely important to remain at the scene of the accident. Police and emergency workers will need to gather information to determine what happened and how to help anyone who has been injured.

Two women were recently killed in Ocala when they were crossing Florida State Route 40 on a Saturday night. Both were struck by a pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses who remained at the scene. The driver, however, did not stay, and the truck was found empty nearby.

The fatal accident is being investigated by a Traffic Homicide Investigator and the Florida Highway Patrol. The driver may be liable for several criminal violations, as well as a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of each victim.

Victims of motor vehicle accidents have the right to seek financial damages whether or not their injuries were caused by a criminal act. An attorney may help victims and their survivors sort out their legal options for settlements and civil lawsuits.
