Avoiding truck accidents in Florida

America runs on trucks, and Florida is no exception. The continued success of the Sunshine State's ports and the expansion of shipping and other industries depend increasingly on trucks and their drivers to move things safely and reliably.

Accidents can happen, however, with nearly 10 percent of motor vehicle accident deaths involving commercial vehicles. Truck drivers owe attention to the road and other drivers to avoid them. Drivers and passengers in all sorts of vehicles can keep themselves safe by adhering to a few simple rules.

Slippery roads are one of the greatest environmental hazards that can cause fatal truck accidents. Experts recommend that drivers reduce speed by as much as one-third in rain and other wet-road situations. Drivers may wish to reduce their speed by one-half in snow, hail and other more dangerous conditions.

Sudden braking, especially when coupled with excessive speed, is another leading factor in accidents involving trucks. Safe following distances must be maintained, especially in congested areas, to increase stopping distance in case of a sudden slowdown on the roads.

Driver fatigue is often a factor in commercial driving accidents, being a factor in nearly 20 percent of truck accidents. Car drivers should take care to stay clear of trucks that are weaving between lanes or suddenly changing course, as they are often signs of a tired driver.

Victims of truck accidents may claim compensation for damage or injury sustained in a collision. An attorney may help these victims determine their best path to restitution through legal avenues.
