Florida man killed in box truck collision

So much of Florida's economy and transportation depends on trucks. Tractor-trailers, cement mixers and other heavy equipment on the road are the lifeblood of construction projects, trade and general commerce in the Sunshine State and beyond.

Accidents can happen, which is why operators of all motor vehicles have to be qualified and vigilant on the road. Even a slow-speed or minor collision with a heavy vehicle can be very damaging to cars and pickup trucks, as well as result in significant injury or even death.

A 66-year-old driving a pickup truck on Florida's Turnpike has died after a chain-reaction crash on the limited-access highway. The incident occurred mid-morning in the northbound lanes when a box truck collided with the rear of the victim's truck.

The driver of the pickup died at the scene, while his 65-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the box truck escaped injury, as well as the occupants of two other pickup trucks involved in the collision.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which may require law enforcement to reconstruct the circumstances under which the collision occurred. Reconstruction is often a tool used to identify liable drivers in collisions.

Victims of truck accidents or the survivors of truck accident fatalities have the right to seek financial reimbursement for medical expenses or other crash-related costs, as well as compensation for pain and emotional distress. An attorney may help victims find the right options through settlements or civil actions.
