New process may reduce Florida slip-and-fall accidents

Slipping and falling on a home or commercial floor surface is a leading cause of injury in the United States. Attentiveness and proper maintenance is usually the only prevention, but Florida is the birthplace of a new way to combat the problem.

A chemist based in Coral Springs recently realized an idea to minimize the dangers caused by slippery floors and other hazards in the workplace or business. His new invention is a treatment for floors that make them resistant to slips and falls by increasing friction forces between floor surfaces and shoes.

"Slip and fall accidents are the second leading cause of accidental deaths in North America," the inventor said. "I have seen firsthand the struggles our customers faced with slip and falls. We want to end slip and falls in South Florida."

An invisible tread surface on slick flooring may decrease the chances of a slip by 400 percent. Interest in the treatment has sprung up all across the Sunshine State, with possible applications at the Miami International Airport and the home of the Florida Panthers hockey team.

An early adopter in Pompano Beach used the treatment to slip-proof her bathroom floor. "I had a little mat there to prevent falls; I don't need it anymore," she said. "The floor doesn't look different, but it feels safe and secure."

Victims of slip-and-fall accidents on commercial properties or other places may be eligible for reimbursement for medical expenses and compensation for pain and suffering. Legal representation may help victims sort out their options for settlements or court proceedings.
