Dog held by Florida authorities after bite attack

Florida is home to one of the United States' most diverse populations of animals, from strange lizards to common house pets. Pet owners or caregivers must always control domesticated animals, especially those in crowded towns and cities. This is particularly true for animals known to attack people.

A Panhandle resident is recovering after a neighbor's pit bull bit her four times in a single morning incident near her home. She was reportedly going to talk to a neighbor when the dog attacked her from behind.

"I ran in the house as fast as I could get there," she later told reporters. "I remember screaming, ‘Somebody help me.'"

When sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene later, the unrestrained pit bull charged them while barking aggressively, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. After the dog turned around and the deputies approached, the dog lunged. One deputy was forced to Taser her.

The dog is in the custody of the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society while law enforcement looks into the cases of two other dog bite attacks near the same location as the recent attack. Investigators believe the same pit bull may have been involved.

The owner told the deputies that the dog had never bitten a person before, and the recent victim told reporters she hopes the owner will help pay for her medical bills. Victims in Florida are entitled to restitution for dog bites if their owners are found to have been negligent or responsible for the injuries.

Legal representation is helpful when seeking reimbursement for medical expenses or other costs related to animal attacks.
