80 percent of motorcycle accidents lead to death or injury

Motorcycle accidents are violent, they happen quickly and they lead to injuries and death in the vast majority of cases. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that over 80 percent of the accidents that get reported to the authorities have one of these outcomes.

In a car, many accidents lead to nothing but property damage. A vehicle may be dented, scratched or even totaled, but the driver and passengers walk away from the scene. While there are tens of thousands of deadly accidents, there are millions of crashes.

Why is the risk so high on a motorcycle? One reason is simply that the bike itself is inherently dangerous. It doesn't have a much protection at all for those riding. Riders are often thrown from the vehicle. They count on helmets to stop head injuries.

By comparison, a car can take an accident in stride. The airbags and seat belts keep people in place. The frame and cage protect the occupants. People may strike the inside of the vehicle, but they rarely strike the road or other external hazards.

At the end of the day, an accident on a motorcycle can lead to significant injuries, even at low speeds that wouldn't have left someone in a car with any injuries at all.

Of course, that's not to say that riders are penalized for their choice of vehicle. They still have a right to safely use the roads, just like anyone else. When another driver is negligent or makes a mistake that violates that right, the injured bikers may want to look into their rights to financial compensation.
