Overcoming PTSD after an auto accident

Accidents and post traumatic stress disorder often go hand-in-hand. Any terrifying and traumatic event can cause it. PTSD is often discussed in relation to crimes or war, but car accidents are also terrifying -- for many people in the United States, nothing that happens to them will ever be more frightening.

If you do get PTSD after a crash, the Mayo Clinic notes that it could lead to:

-- Thinking about the event uncontrollably.

-- Have nightmares about the crash.

-- Experiencing flashbacks, especially in similar situations.

-- Having severe anxiety, which could make it so you can't drive.

To overcome PTSD, special treatment is sometimes needed. Some people have to see professionals for hypnotherapy, psychotherapy or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Others have to go to the doctor and get medication, despite the expense of the visit and the prescription. Still others have to change the way that they eat, trying to take exceptional care of their bodies in an effort to combat PTSD and related mental issues.

In some cases, the best treatment is to get back in the car and drive again, proving to yourself that the accident won't happen twice. Some people do this by signing up for special defensive driving classes where they work with professional drivers and learn how they can stay safe.

The costs can mount after an accident, even when you are physically healed. Mental issues like PTSD may last far longer. As you have to pay for treatments and meetings with specialists, it's important to know all of your legal rights to compensation.
