Highway fatality rates in 2016

On January 1, we celebrate the new year and look forward. As the year continues, the numbers come in and it becomes easier to look back with a clear picture. The National Safety Council just released statistics concerning driving habits in 2016 and they are alarming.

With an increase from previous years, the highway safety figures show that distracted driving and drunk driving are still serious threats and that, as a whole drivers are more complacent than they ought to be.

A closer look at the numbers

On the year, roadside fatalities totaled over 40,000 for the first time in nearly a decade. While the growing economy and cheap gas prices played a role, the total number of accidents is a 6 percent increase from 2015 and a 14 percent rise from just two years ago.

The annual report also explored survey results of driving behaviors, such as wearing seat belts, driving under the influence, comfort using a phone while driving and more. To summarize, the results show that drivers are comfortable behind the wheel, often to a fault when that confidence is compared with the crash statistics.

Life after the crash

Cars are a fundamental way of life here in Tampa and it's easy to take the ease of getting from Point A to Point B for granted. However, traveling at high speeds in an auto can quickly turn from familiar to dangerous.

When careless or inattentive behavior behind the wheel causes an accident, there are significant costs. If you've been injured or even lost a loved one in a tragic accident, you need to explore your options to make sure that recovery and costs are covered -- monetary costs, but also pain and suffering damages.

An accident doesn't just cause physical pain. The damages can include missing time from work, a change of careers and strained personal relationships. It's important that, following a car accident, you examine how it has affected you. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help to understand the short and long-term consequences and offer a better perspective on an incident that only takes a moment but can have lasting costs for far longer.
