What should I do after a truck accident?

Truck accidents are no longer a rare occurrence on the roads in Florida. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, in 2015, 3,852 was the total number of truck accident fatalities. The percentage of people who died from being involved in this type of incident was 69. As common as commercial vehicle accidents are becoming, no one ever really expects to become involved in one. The actions you take afterward can affect you for a long time.

Contact the authorities

No matter how minor or severe your accident is, you should contact the authorities as soon as you are able. Inform them of the situation and that you need medical attention. Try to remain calm. If you can, get out of your vehicle and move to a safer location near the scene. Once authorities arrive, make a request for medical attention. Even if the only injuries you have are scrapes and bruises, you should still receive medical treatment so they can be documented. Also, some truck accident injuries do not show up immediately after collisions.

Make a report

Make a police report so that there is a legal record of what has transpired. While explaining the events leading up to the accident, do not say anything that will establish that you are at fault, even if you are. Try to provide as much information as you can. If possible, describe the license plates of any vehicles that were present when the accident occurred. Any witness information and pictures that you can provide is beneficial to your situation.

Truck accidents can be hard to avoid sometimes. With the right actions, it is possible to minimize much of the aftermath that comes with the situation and improve the outcome.
