Deadly wrong-way crash leads to arrest

A wrong-way accident in Polk County, Florida, ended with one fatality and the other driver behind bars. The man who was killed was 32 years old.

According to reports, both vehicles were on Interstate 4, going over the Carpenters Way Overpass in the eastbound lanes. The Florida Highway Patrol says that one driver, who is 24 years old, was heading west and he ran into the 32-year-old man's car in a head-on collision.

After the initial crash, another car that was already heading east piled into the back of the accident. The first eastbound driver was killed and the second, a 23-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

Police do believe that alcohol was a contributing factor. The driver who was arrested has been charged with DUI manslaughter, driving in the wrong direction, and DUI property damage. The crash happened right around three in the morning.

The sizes of the respective vehicles are worth noting. The 24-year-old man was in a Dodge Ram, a full-sized pickup. The 32-year-old man was in a Ford Fusion, a much smaller sedan.

Pictures from the scene do show that both vehicles were heavily damaged. The sedan is sitting behind the pickup, off to the side of the road, with pieces strewn next to it. The pickup has the hood up and the doors open, and the front end is so badly mangled that it's hard to tell what type of vehicle it is.

Wrong-way accidents on divided highways are accidents that, theoretically, should never happen, yet they do happen all too often. Drivers can be left with life-changing injuries or even killed. When this happens, it's important for those drivers or their family members to know what rights they have to compensation.
