Unhelmeted motorcycle victims face huge medical costs

There is a dark side to motorcycle ownership that many people need to be aware of. Hillsborough residents who do not wear helmets can have larger medical bills than those who are using a helmet at the time of a crash. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out that health care costs are significantly higher when bikers without a helmet incur a brain injury. Unhelmeted motorcyclists are also charged at least 13 times more for medical care.

According to the CDC, the annual financial impact of motorcycle related injuries and deaths is $12 billion. Many motorcyclists who wear helmets see an average savings of $15,000 per year on their health care costs, largely because their injuries, including head-related ones are less severe. The cost of medical care for motorcyclists who sustained head injuries from motor vehicle accidents is $44 million.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that one study shows riders who were not wearing helmets at the time of their accident had an average hospitalization cost of $7,208, as opposed to $5,852, for those who were helmeted. According to another report, hospital admission care for bikers who were not wearing helmets at the time of injury was $17,704. Unhelmeted riders who suffer from severe trauma and brain injuries are more likely to incur higher hospital charges than helmeted motorcyclists because they require more critical care.

Motorcycle helmets do not prevent crashes, however they can help to minimize the severity of injuries motorcyclists end up with. The law doesn’t require the use of helmets for motorcyclists who are over the age of 21. However, wearing helmets may mean the difference between life and death and lower medical expenses.
