Examining the circumstances in which truck accidents occur

The vast majority of drivers on the roads and highways are accustomed to sharing their space with other cars, motorcycles and, of course, trucks. Indeed, it's not uncommon for people to be so accustomed to the presence of these other types of vehicles that they actually become inured to the unique dangers they pose and vice versa.

This is particularly true as far as trucks are concerned. Indeed, it's not uncommon for there to be tragic consequences when motorists fail to account for the mechanical limitations of semi trucks, or truckers fail to operate their rigs in a safe and responsible manner around motorists.

In today's post, the first in a series, we'll start exploring some of the ways in which trucks can -- and do -- cause tractor trailer accidents. As always, the goal is to raise awareness and provide motorists with some warning signs to help them stay safe.

Intersection accidents

While we just assume that most people will follow traffic laws, obey traffic signals and practice safe driving at intersections, these are typically one of the more common locations at which traffic accidents occur. In fact, intersection accidents can be serious or even fatal if they occur where there are heavy traffic levels and/or motorists travel at a high rate of speed.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, intersection accidents involving trucks occur at intersections when truck drivers:

  • Fail to properly judge the flow of traffic
  • Fail to yield the right of way when making right or left turns
  • Fail to obey stop signs or traffic lights
  • Fail to check and/or adjust to cross traffic before entering intersection
  • Fail to maintain a safe speed and following distance

We will continue exploring this important topic in future posts. In the meantime, please consider speaking with an experienced legal professional as soon as possible if you've suffered irreparable harm in a truck accident caused by the recklessness of another.
