Can you sue after an outdoor slip-and-fall accident?

You know that you may have a right to sue after an indoor slip-and-fall accident. You're clearly on someone else's property. If that person created a dangerous situation or allowed one to persist -- a store owner who didn't tell employees to clean up after a spill, for instance -- then he or she may be liable.

However, what if you're outside? Do you still have the same rights?

You do. You have a right to safety on a person's property, whether or not you're inside the building itself. When negligence comes into play, if someone else's actions increased the risk for you, you may deserve compensation.

For example, perhaps the store owner knows that the lighting around the building isn't safe at night. It's simply not adequate. However, upgrading the lights would be very expensive, so he or she keeps putting it off. Then, while simply trying to walk over to your car, you can't see where you're going. You trip and fall. You may have a case.

Lighting issues are also important, even when you know there is a hazard. Maybe you were going down a cement outdoor staircase, for instance. The store owner may be liable if he or she should have known that poor lighting on the stairs could lead to a serious slip and fall incident and still did nothing to rectify the situation.

These cases can get to be complicated, and it's very important for you to know all of your legal options if you were injured and you're now facing substantial medical bills.
