Car turns in front of motorcycle, critically injuring rider

For motorcyclists, one of the most dangerous possible situations is when a driver does not see a motorcycle and turns in front of it. These impacts can be nearly unavoidable, and motorcyclists, without the benefit of a metal vehicle around them, can be seriously injured.

That appears to be exactly what happened in Carrollwood on Monday, Jan. 30. A 29-year-old man in a 2014 Ford Focus had stopped at an intersection, waiting to turn left. A 21-year-old rider on a 2011 Suzuki GSX-R6 was coming toward him, riding his bike in the inside lane, planning to go through the intersection.

The driver of the Focus did not wait for the bike to go through. He turned left and hit it.

The younger man, who did have a helmet on, was thrown from the bike. Emergency crews took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where it's been announced that he's in critical condition. The driver of the Ford was not hurt.

At this point, police have not said exactly why the 29-year-old turned in front of the bike -- if he didn't see it, for example, or if he just thought he had more space than he did. Reports indicated, however, that alcohol was not involved. The crash happened around 6:00 p.m.

Critical injuries can lead to incredibly high medical costs, and some injures may come with the need for extended medical care -- for months, years, or even life. When facing these types of costs, those who are hurt need to know if they can seek compensation from those who caused such serious accidents.
