Quick facts about slip and fall accidents

Slip and fall accidents are very serious, despite how often they're portrayed as comical in movies, TV shows, and other media. They're one of the top reasons that people are injured every year. Below are a few quick facts that help show just how serious they can be:

1. About 5 percent of people who slip and fall suffer fractured bones as a result. While things like skull fractures can be traumatic and even fatal, the statistics show that hip fractures are most common, leading to the most health issues.

2. That being said, the most serious fall injuries lead to fatalities -- something that happens to men and women in a roughly equal split. However, though the actual fatality numbers are similar between the genders, about 11 percent of job-related deaths for men come from falls, but just 5 percent for women.

3. Every year, about eight million people wind up in the emergency room after falls alone. This makes up 21.3 percent of all visits, and it puts falls as the leading cause of trips to the ER.

4. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has noted that about two million fall injuries can be directly traced back to flooring materials.

5. For those 55 years old and older, the majority of workers' compensation claims come about after a slip and fall accident.

As you can see, the odds of being involved in a slip and fall accident are fairly high, and these can have very serious consequences. When you're missing work and facing significant medical bills, you need to know if you have a right to compensation.
