Truck accident stats show a disconcerting trend

Semi-trucks and large trucks pose very serious risks to people out on the road. They are powerful, unwieldy vehicles that can tip over, fail to brake on time and generally do tremendous damage when they are involved in an accident. This is to say nothing of the drivers of these vehicles, who can often become distracted or fatigued by their lack of sleep, their extensive workload or just being lost in thought while on the road.

Given the serious nature of trucks out on the road, it is disconcerting to see some recent trends regarding truck accidents. According to statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there was a 33 percent decline in fatal crashes involved large trucks or buses from 2004 to 2009. But then from 2009 to 2013, the fatal crash numbers jumped by 20 percent.

Thankfully, 2014 showed a 5 percent decline in the number of large trucks and buses involved in fatal crashes when compared to 2013. But as the figures generally show, there is an upward trend in these figures since 2009. This should alarm safety advocates and lawmakers alike. Trucks and buses have the potential to cause more damage and injuries in the crashes they are involved in, simply due to their inherent size and power.

When negligence or recklessness is involved in a truck accident, the victims of the wreck need to consider the legal side of their case. They may choose to pursue civil litigation. If so, they should consult with an experienced personal injury attorney.
