2013 data: Florida has most motorcycle accidents in country

Motorcyclists are inherently in a dangerous position out on the road. They ride powerful, fast vehicles that can travel as fast as cars, but that lack any of the protections provided by cars. No air bags; no seat belts; no padding or protections offered by the vehicle. Motorcyclists rely entirely on a helmet and some smaller pieces of safety gear to protect them in case of an accident. Sadly, though, when motorcyclists get into an accident, they often suffer serious or even fatal injuries.

The state of Florida is no stranger to fatal motorcycle accidents. In fact, Florida sees the most motorcycle accident deaths in the country -- at least based on 2013 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Florida, Texas and California are the top three states for motorcycle deaths. These three states have very similar motorcycle fatality numbers from 2013 (467, 457 and 435, respectively). The amazing thing is that no other state has even 200 motorcycle fatalities.

This is due to two factors: the populations of Florida, Texas and California, and the climate of these three states. Given that these three states are so populous and that their climates are favorable to motorcyclists (nearly year round, in most places), it makes it much more likely for motorcycle accidents to happen in Florida, Texas and California. And, thus, it is more likely for these states to have fatal motorcycle accidents.

When these fatal accidents occur, families are affected. People may lose a loved one in a negligent way, as another driver didn't see the motorcyclist. When reckless driving is involved, the victims and/or their loved ones need to consider civil justice.
