How do I know when a driver is drunk?

Drunk motorists in Florida are not just a danger to themselves, they are a huge hazard for every man, woman, child and pet who is traveling on the roads. However, learning how to spot the signs of drunk driving can reduce your chances of ever being involved in an accident and injured, and help to make the roads much safer.

Alcohol interferes with the way the brain receives, processes and transmits information. According to the University of West Florida, common signs that may indicate a vehicle operator is engaging in drunk driving are weaving back and forth on the road and speeding. They may also drift across lanes or into oncoming traffic and drive from side to side. Motorists who are under the influence of alcohol often maintain irregular speeds. They have impaired judgment and response times. Also, inebriated drivers often exhibit erratic braking behavior because they have trouble controlling and coordinating their body movements with their thoughts.

If you suspect another driver is intoxicated, you should contact the police. Make sure you have moved your vehicle out of harm’s way and are safely parked on the shoulder of the road or in a parking lot if you decide to use your cellphone to report that person.

It is not always possible for you to know from observation when a driver is drunk. However, paying attention to the driving behavior of other motorists can reduce the likelihood of you and your passengers being involved in a wreck with an intoxicated driver.
